Nessebar's old town occupies a rock peninsula roughly 850 metres long, tied to the Bulgarian mainland by an isthmus barely wide enough for two lanes of traffic. Inside that footprint archaeologists have catalogued the remains of more than forty churches. Little of it stands more than three streets from salt water. A wooden windmill still stands on the causeway, the last of several that once ground grain at the harbour's edge.
